This famous novel of “Jules Verne” is a story of extraordinary accomplishment First published in 1873, the novel tells the story of “Phileas Fogg” of London and his newly employed French valet “Passepartout” attempting to circumnavigate the world in 80 days on a £20,000 wager set by his friends at the “Reform Club”. The story depicts how the personal character of “Fogg”, high values and single-mindedness of purpose enable him to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
The setting at the beginning is at the house of “Fogg” in London, but it changes to different countries in the world. “Verne”, through his protagonist’s adventures, describes the whole world, different cultures, surroundings, sights, otes and societies. The plot is filled with unexpected turns, and intense events and the reader follows “Fogg”, hoping he makes his deadline. The importance of the setting to the plot is that while reading a novel, such as this, with a constantly different setting it helps the reader realize the customization that the protagonist must go through adjusting from country to country.
“Jules Verne” is widely regarded as one of the pillars of travel writing, and this novel is more than just an adventure novel propped with some details of mystery and suspense, as the novelist’s vision went beyond that. As a matter of fact, the wager of “Fogg” originated from the result of a fairly recent development (in reference to the story’s period) -the opening of a new railway station in India which, according to The Daily Telegraph, made it possible to travel around the world in 80 days.
